Westwood Warriors Basketball 2009 - 2010

1-18-10

Currently our Young Warriors sit in a first-place tie with district rival Marathon High. The Warriors battled through some early season troubles and have gotten back on track, winning 5 games in a row. With dominating performances against Mater Lakes, Brito, and Westminster Christian, all 20-point victories, the Warriors are definitely coming together as a team at the right time.

Senior forward Robert Espino has combined with junior guard Jose Carabano to form a "one-two punch" that has dominated throughout the year. The solid play of the interior defense, anchored by the November " player-of-the-month" Qunitin McCall, along with the always steady Daniel Valladares & Giancarlo Miralbal have helped Westwood solidify the battle in the paint.

Newcomers Danny Portales & Emmanuel Dordoye along with the consistent efforts of Mike Cofino, have established the Warriors as the team-to-beat come playoffs. The Young Warriors have relied heavily on their intensity and defensive efforts to propel them to victory all season long.

Their willingness to give of themselves while focusing on a team-first attitude has helped in the maturing process this year.

Our Warriors look to continue their momentum from last year's 17-7 finish. The summer has been one of growth and development for a team that's eyeing the District crown. We finished in the semi-finals bracket of the Embry-Riddle Team Camp held in Daytona Beach, while compiling a 10-1 record in summer league play as well. "If you look at the nucleus of guys that we have returning, we have a number of guys that have had great experience and played quality minutes," head coach Jose Amat stated. "That should give us some excellent leadership this year. I believe we have a lot of the pieces that will make up a really competitive basketball team in 2009-10. We have some tremendous rebounding potential, with several big-men returning and our overall foot speed will propel us defensively. I think there's a chance to have a really special team.

As we get ready to start our regular season in a couple of weeks, the excitement around our basketball program is at an all-time high. We have worked extremely hard shaping our team into the type of student-athletes we enjoy coaching and cheering for. We are blessed here at Westwood Christian and we remain focused in positively influencing the lives of our players. We work extremely hard to put together a first-class product that represents our school in the right way.

GO WARRIORS!
